He embraced the eternal mist of guilt as it consumed him.
He approached the ragged, wooden aperture that would attract the eye of the blind – for what lay behind it was something priceless. A restless, shivering hand autonomously moved towards the shimmering and shiny knob of gold that could outshine the stars. An amalgam of excitement and ecstasy was almost overwhelming, as he pulled up on the knob with all his might.
Only then did he realise his mistake.
Betrayal. His joy turned to rage – like a ravaging flame, hungry for revenge. Excitement turned to fear as an ever-increasing sense of suspense pulled him towards pulled him towards his demise. Even time had no mercy, as it seemed to be crawling, elongating the moment unto infinity, with a piercing glare. Then imagination took control, with a sense of mockery, added to his despair. Had it been possible, he would’ve robbed his brain of sight and driven his eyeballs back into their dens.
Was this the end? Perhaps he should accept his fate as an atonement for his sins – Millions of thoughts crossed his mind – none with optimism.
And then he moved his feet ferociously – he could feel the thumping of feet behind him, the rustling of something metallic, and a deafening screech that dug into the deepest depths of his cranium.
Then he heard a low moan. The bewitching door lay shut, and a lifeless corpse being the cause. As he fell onto his knees, pearls flowed down his face. The murder of an innocent filled him with remorse; as he recalled the bond they had once shared. Had he listened to the warnings, a life could’ve been saved. Alas, greed was the victor.
A lesson had been learnt. Lines had been drawn. With clenched fists and acquired wisdom, he set off on a quest for vengeance, whilst fuelling an incredible legacy.
